Preparations for an expedition (October 22nd, 1996)

To explore the Central African Republic, the quickest and cheapest way is to reach the capital Bangui via Paris.
We showed below some necessary items for an exploration, but of course, you have to prepare your own items.

Item Importance Remark
Passport
Indispensable

Certificate of vaccination against yellow fever
Indispensable
Valid for 10 years from 10 days after the vaccination, but during certain days before and after this vaccination you cannot have any other vaccinations.
Air tickets
Indispensable
The price of a cheap airline ticket from Japan to Paris is about 100-200 thousands yens and Paris to Bangui is about 100-200 thousands yens, depending on the season. You can buy a cheap one in Japan theses days.
Visa
Indispensable

Money
Indispensable
It is better to exchange Japanese yen to French francs at the airport in Paris because the exchange rate is favorable there. It is highly not recommendable to buy US dollars. Credits cards are almost useless here.
Clothing
Indispensable
You must bring the clothes with which you can cope with the temperature from 15 to 40 degrees Celsius. It is better to bring a sweater because the temperature can be low in an airplane because of the air conditioning.
Vaccination against tetanus
Strongly recommended
It is better to be inoculated against the disease because the vaccination has almost no side effects.
Other vaccinations
????
There is no other vaccination required, but those against cholera, hepatitis and encephalomeningitis are recommended.
Preventive medicines against malaria
Recommended
According to the doctors in the Central African Republic, chloroquine (commercial name: Nivaquine) and Proguanil (Paludrine) are considered as prevention medicines in this country. They have almost no side effects. Be careful when you use other preventive medicines because they can have serious side effects on some people. You must take preventive measures before entering the country, but the problem is that we cannot get these medicines easily in Japan.
AIDS preventive devices
????
Those are necessary for some people. Here in this country we cannot get those of good quality.
Other medicines
Recommended
We can get almost all medicines here, but it is recommended to bring medicines against diarrhea, flu and colds, and migraines.
Band-Aids and a clinical thermometer are useful.
Insurance for overseas travelers
Recommended
Health insurance policyholders don't necessarily need it, but it is better to be insured because there are more risks here than other countries.
Overseas Travel Assistance Service(OTAS)
Strongly recommended
When you get seriously injured or seriously ill, it is probable you cannot receive enough treatments. So if you are insured by OTAS, it will give you a sense of security and relieve the Japanese Embassy and your compatriots of a lot of troubles. This is a kind of insurance against the cost of the emergency transportation only. OTAS covers all the cost without limit.
